Highlights
- Schiphol's data register contributes to its ambition of becoming the best digital airport in the world.
- This (open) data portal gives companies, individuals and Schiphol staff access to a wide range of data sets at different levels.
- An easy-to-use back end so Schiphol can manage data sets itself.
- New ways of working together with suppliers, airlines and retail operators.
Hitting KPIs with data. That was the goal and that was the result.
Open data on the way to the best digital airport in the world
Data on parking spaces, shops, flights, travellers, energy use, companies and more: Schiphol holds an enormous amount of information. To give customers the best possible travel experience, Schiphol wants to make the most of that data, using it to simplify parking policy, keep the airport clean and improve safety, for example. Making data available and sharing it is crucial for that, but you do have to know where to find it. Schiphol Group asked Indicia to build an online data register that lets it share a wide range of data at different levels, internally and externally: the Schiphol Data Portal.
Giving customers the best travel experience means they need to find a parking space quickly and know where to get a coffee without queuing. Delivering that depends on improving business processes continuously, responding to new insights in time and anticipating situations as they come up. Sharing data is crucial to all of it.
Sharing data is the norm
Schiphol's open data portal makes it easier to share data sets and to find them. The portal holds data sets covering HR, finance, real estate, operations, passenger experience, security and IT, among other areas. As a forward-looking organisation, Schiphol also wants to make public data available to other organisations, to support the development of services that improve the travel experience. With the portal Indicia built, finding and sharing information inside and outside the organisation is remarkably simple. So is handling data requests.
Access at several levels
The register of data sets Indicia built for Schiphol makes it possible to give users access rights at three levels. There is a public section and a section only Schiphol itself can reach, which keeps confidential data protected. Behind the scenes, Schiphol can publish new data sets itself and assign access rights right down to the individual. Indicia has built similar open data portals before. Together with our partner Textinfo, we built an open data portal for the Dutch central government that now holds information about, and links to, more than 10,000 data sets. And the city of Nijmegen publishes its data on an Indicia open data portal too.
